Canada Day History:
Canada Day commemorates the formation of the British North American Union on July 1, 1867. Four provinces, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick became a self-governing body under Great Britain’s dominion. Originally named Dominion Day, the name was changed in 1983. Canada Day is celebrated on July 1st each year.
Canada Day Facts & Quotes:
- On July 1, 1980, O Canada was named the official national anthem.
- The Queen of England is often in attendance at Canada Day celebration held at Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario.
- Although the country of Canada was formed in 1867, Canada Day did not become an official holiday until 1982.
