Today marks the second celebration of the: International Day of Charity; an idea that began in Hungary, in 2010. This idea to annually celebrate a day of charity was a civil society initiative; wholeheartedly supported by the Hungarian Parliament and Government.
Later on, during 2012, the UN General Assembly declared an international day of observance dedicated to charity. They named this commemorative day: The International Day of Charity.
And to honor one of the current world’s most charitable people, the UN General Assembly chose September 5th as its annual observance date; the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s passing.
Just so you know, the International Day of Charity is not about ‘giving away money’ for a day. (Although, I’m certain that no charitable organization would ever turn away a legally provided donation). *chuckle*
Instead, the International Day of Charity is meant to commemorate the universal desire to help those who are the least fortunate members of every society.
This is a day meant to raise world awareness. A day dedicated to showcase charity related goals and activities. A day to hopefully inspire each of us to be charitable toward one another.
Here is the definition of ‘charity’ as per Merriam-Webster:
- 1: benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity
- 2a: generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering; also : aid given to those in need
- 2b: an institution engaged in relief of the poor
- 2c: public provision for the relief of the needy
- 3a: gift for public benevolent purposes
- 3b: an institution (as a hospital) founded by such a gift
- 4: lenient judgment of others
So with that said, here’s wishing you a happy International Day of Charity! May you always be blessed by help should you need it; and may you always have the ability to bless others around you with help should they need it.
