Charline Ratcliff reviews: The Seraph Contingency

Bizarre but fun…

The Seraph Contingency… Where should I begin with my review? For starters, The Seraph Contingency was a good book, although I wasn’t The Seraph Contingency, Jennifer Falesreally surprised. (I had previously enjoyed reading one of Jennifer Fales’ earlier tales: Shadow’s and Fire). With that said, having the same author and being interesting and well-written, is pretty much where any similarity between these two titles ends.

I did find The Seraph Contingency to be a unique, interesting and fun read. The plot is definitely bizarre, but in a good way. What this means; is that you are never quite sure where you, or the book’s main character, will wind up. The Seraph Contingency is also one of the most unusual books I have read in the past twelve months. It is kind of like Alice in Wonderland meets the 21st century, only this ‘Alice’ is an angel, named Anael.

Our Anael has apparently bypassed Wonderland and gone straight to the land beyond those pearly gates, but, unfortunately, she was bored out of her mind. What’s an angel really to do in a tedious place like heaven? Well, she decided she should take a voluntary (and secret) stroll through purgatory. After all, it looked exciting from way up there in heaven… She stopped in a seedy looking bar; seeking a drink and some excitement – and what do you know? She found it. Or should I say, it found her.

Excitement aka ‘it’ hijacked her, and took her straight to hell. From there she wound up becoming the prisoner of a demonic Duchess who wants Anael’s wings. The Duchess is intent on attracting (and holding) the interest of the one, and only, Lucifer. She’s certain Anael’s snowy-white wings will do the trick. Don’t fret though, from there Anael winds up ‘top-side’ with the humans, before she re-visits Purgatory and then it’s back to Hell. And I must say, The Seraph Contingency really gives new meaning to the old phrase: “to hell and back again…”

In summary, a good book, quite interesting and well-written. And, I am hoping that down the road there will also be a sequel.
